Last week we wrote about the long-term cost of subscription security cameras. This week we want to talk about something that often matters more than the bill: what happens to your footage when the company you’re paying decides — or accidentally — pulls the plug.
Cloud-connected security cameras have a structural dependency that doesn’t get mentioned in the box. The camera in your hand is essentially a viewfinder; the actual recording, motion detection, AI alerts, and history all live on servers somewhere else. When those servers go down, get breached, or change policy, your security system goes down with them.
The track record isn’t great
This isn’t a hypothetical. The last several years have given us a steady stream of major-brand incidents — outages, data leaks, and quiet policy changes that left paying customers exposed:

A well-known cloud camera brand disclosed an incident where users briefly saw thumbnails — and in some cases live feeds — from other people’s cameras. The fix came after the exposure already happened.
Encryption gap
“Local-only” wasn’t actually local
A brand that marketed its cameras as keeping footage on-device was found to be streaming snapshots to the cloud unencrypted under certain conditions. Customers who chose the product specifically for privacy had no idea.
These aren’t isolated stories. They’re the kind of thing that happens routinely when your camera’s “smart features” all run on someone else’s infrastructure. You don’t see the dependency until it fails.
What “local recording” actually changes
A self-hosted security camera works differently at the wire. The video is encoded inside the camera and written to storage you own — either a microSD card in the camera itself or a network video recorder (NVR) wired into your local network. The internet is optional. The cloud is optional. Both are useful for remote viewing, but neither is required for the camera to keep doing its job.
That means:
- An internet outage doesn’t stop your cameras from recording. Storms, ISP failures, router reboots — your footage keeps writing to local storage. When the connection comes back, the history is already there waiting for you.
- A cloud-provider outage at the vendor doesn’t take you offline. If GW Security’s website went down for an hour, your cameras at home wouldn’t notice. They’re not phoning home to operate.
- Your video isn’t sitting on someone else’s server. Recordings live on the SD card or NVR you control. There’s no third-party account that can be breached, scraped, or subpoenaed without your knowledge.
- The features don’t get taken away. Smart motion detection, AI human/vehicle recognition, scheduling, recording rules — these are built into the camera and NVR firmware. They don’t expire and they don’t change tier overnight when a corporate strategy memo lands.

The “but I want remote access” question
Self-hosted doesn’t mean offline-only. GW Security cameras (and most modern self-hosted systems) still give you a mobile app, push notifications, and live remote viewing from anywhere — they just don’t depend on those services to function. When you’re at work and want to check the front door, the app works. When the internet at the house drops, the camera still records and the next time you reconnect, the missed footage is waiting on the NVR.
It’s the difference between a camera that uses the internet and a camera that needs the internet. From the user’s side, day-to-day, they feel almost identical. The difference shows up the day something goes wrong.
When cloud-only might still be the right call
We’re not going to pretend cloud cameras are useless. There are genuine cases where the trade-off makes sense:
- Renters with no permanent setup. Battery cameras with cloud storage are dead-simple to peel, stick, and take with you when you move.
- Short-term properties. Vacation rentals, construction sites, temporary monitoring — situations where you’d rather pay a small recurring fee than buy hardware you’ll redeploy.
- Single-camera setups in low-stakes spots. If the camera is mostly there to see who rang the doorbell, the dependency on a cloud account is a smaller deal.
When local recording becomes the obvious choice
For most homeowners and small business owners with property they plan to be in for more than a year or two, the math tips quickly:
- You want footage during an outage. Burglaries and incidents don’t politely wait for your internet to come back up.
- You want footage you can hand over yourself. Pulling clips off a local NVR takes seconds. Getting footage out of a defunct cloud account can take weeks — or never.
- You don’t want to renew anything. Set it up once, walk away, and check it when you need it. No login expirations, no plan changes, no “we’ve simplified our pricing” emails.
- You have more than one or two cameras. Cloud fees scale linearly with camera count. Local storage doesn’t.
Last week’s piece walked through the dollar cost. This week’s point is the trust cost. The cheapest camera and the most “convenient” cloud plan both share the same hidden line item: a vendor that has to keep its servers up, its security tight, and its policies stable for your security system to keep working as advertised. Self-hosted cameras take that line item off the table entirely.
